Papaver Somniferum ‘Maanzaad’ – Bread Seed Poppy x 500

£1.60

500 (Min) x Maanzaad poppy seeds

Description

Beautiful, papery-white single flowers with a claret basal blotch, ‘Maanzaad’ is grown as a hardy annual and is a hit with pollinating insects. The seeds are considered to be the best (of the poppies) for making a textural topping for bread. Also, while the rest of the plant is harmful if eaten, these poppy seeds are also perfect for adding flavour to curries and salads. Height 90cm.

How to grow: Sow shallowly, directly into a well prepared bed in spring, or (for an earlier display the following year) late summer to early autumn. Water well and as the seedlings appear, thin them out to 30cm intervals keeping just the healthiest and most robust ones to develop. When watering, avoid the ‘little and often’ approach, but when the soil becomes dry, water thoroughly so it can really soak in. Best sown in swathes for dramatic effect.
